Why this exists

Hi there and thanks for visiting.

I set this photoblog up out of the desire to create a space where I could put little photo vignettes up. A place to call my own, where I could share the images I enjoyed making.

Online publishing of my images has always been a part of my life, but increasingly, I've been finding it difficult to share my work without ceding some right to some platform or other.

There was Facebook, there was Instagram (more of the same), there was Flickr, there was 500px. Every one of these companies sought to monetise my work. And I can't blame them - sites and services live and die by the traffic, and therefore their ad revenue.

And then there are the Wordpress.org, Squarespace and Wix services out there. In a sense, they were better because they're revenue model was subscription dependent and they weren't beholden to ad money. I paid money, uploaded photos, and they did the rest. But again, because they promised simplicity, one also had to cede some creative control.

I'm done with all of that.

So I dusted off my computing degree, fired up a virtual machine and launching my own Ghost instance. Slap on a nice theme and off we go!

I hope you enjoy my images as much as I enjoyed making them.

Thanks for being here.
